Renovation of Chemical Process Room Floors

Existing Second Floor Chemical Process Rooms in a pharmaceutical facility had suffered from several years of minor chemical spills. Locally, the coated concrete floors had shrinkage cracks allowing the potential for chemical spills to attack the slabs.

What Did the Customer Want to Achieve from the Remedial Works?

  • Repairs to the cracked floors.
  • Installation of local bunds around tanks to allow any spills to be contained.
  • Installation of an extremely chemically resistant trafficable floor lining system that would bridge future floor cracks and cope with the broad spectrum of chemicals in the Chemical Process Area.
  • Fast, cost effective installation during facility shutdown.
  • Aesthetically pleasing finish with defined walkways.

Stonhard Single Source Solution

  • Mechanically prepare floor to remove existing coating. Fill and repair existing cracks and damaged areas with Stonclad HT epoxy mortar.
  • Using Stonclad HT epoxy mortar install 100mm high coves in all areas and local “sleeping policeman” bunds around individual storage tanks.
  • In the main Chemical Process Tank Room install a full vinyl ester fibreglass reinforced tanking system Stonchem 855 in mid grey colour.
  • To cost optimise the whole installation other rooms, which had less aggressive chemicals stored had 6mm of Stonclad HT epoxy mortar sealed with Stonkote HT4 coating instead of vinyl ester.
  • To improve aesthetics and to provide a defined walkway contrasting colours of Stonkote HT4 were used with an antislip Texture 2 added.
