Future-Proof Flooring Upgrade for Sustainable Tank Cleaning Facility in Alblasserdam

A family-owned tanker transport and cleaning business based in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, recently faced a critical need to upgrade the flooring in its certified tank cleaning facility. This area includes the complete high-traffic tank cleaning area and concrete upstands.
Challenges & Customer Requirements
Cleaning tankers and containers generates significant volumes of hot, contaminated water, requiring effective handling and sustainable treatment. Committed to environmental responsibility, the company has invested in a biological water purification system to ensure the processed water can be safely reintroduced into the water network.
Daily operations expose the facility's floors to considerable stress, including chemical and thermal loads and mechanical impacts from heavy vehicles. The customer, a long-standing client of Stonhard Benelux, had their original Stonclad UR floor installed 10 years ago and initially requested spot repairs due to its excellent continued performance. However, a thorough assessment revealed that a complete refurbishment would be more efficient and future-proof. With the floor still structurally sound, it was the ideal time to replace only the top layer and fully restore durability and functionality across the 540 m² area.
Solution
Stonhard delivered a customised flooring solution built on durability, chemical resistance, and safety to meet the facility's rigorous demands. The original floor was refurbished using Stonclad UR, a heavy-duty urethane mortar system ideal for withstanding thermal shock and mechanical stress.
Stonseal GS6, an abrasion-resistant polyurethane topcoat, was applied across all areas over a broadcast-textured surface to enhance wearing properties and provide slip resistance.
In the most critical zones exposed to extreme chemical and thermal loads, Stonchem 858 was installed instead. This high-performance vinyl ester system provides reinforced protection and excellent chemical resistance, extending the floor's service life for many years.
The project was carried out by Stonhard's in-house installers under strict quality, health and safety protocols and completed to the customer's satisfaction.
