Stonhard Minimises Downtime with Complete Linings Upgrade
Application Area: Gutters Washer Line
A global leader in metal packaging has upgraded critical gutters of the washer line at its Dutch facility, achieving significant operational and maintenance improvements. Stonhard recently completed two major projects at the facility, with another planned for the near future. By implementing Stonhard’s Stonchem 441LV lining solution, the company avoided potential production downtime, reduced annual maintenance costs, and extended the facility’s lifespan.
Challenges & Customer Requirements
The gutters had suffered years of wear from turbulent water flow, causing coating deterioration and leaving concrete vulnerable to erosion. Previous intermittent stoppages highlighted the risk of more serious production delays. Complicating the project, the gutters were difficult to access due to surrounding process equipment, making conventional spray-applied lining systems impractical. Minimising downtime was critical to maintaining continuous production and operational efficiency.
Before
Solution
The client partnered with Stonhard, a manufacturer and installer of industrial linings, for a full turnkey solution. The project utilised Stonchem 441LV, a hand-applied, low-viscosity epoxy lining providing both waterproofing and mechanical protection.
Stonhard managed the entire process from surface preparation and removal of the old coating to material supply and hand application over the trench surfaces. The hand-applied system allowed the team to navigate confined areas without compromising coverage or quality. The installation was completed within two weeks, fully preserving production schedules.
“Working as both manufacturer and installer ensured full control over quality and performance,” said Sean McIntyre, Coatings & Linings Manager Europe. “The hand-applied system allowed us to reach difficult areas while achieving a seamless, watertight lining that will protect critical infrastructure for years to come.”

After
The gutters are now fully watertight and mechanically robust. This project highlights how Stonhard’s integrated solutions combine innovative materials and skilled installation to deliver cost-effective, durable outcomes for demanding industrial environments.
